APTA Health Care Reform Resource Center
What APTA is Doing in Health Care
Reform
APTA is working with Congress to ensure physical therapists'
priorities and needs are met in any health care reform legislation. APTA
isn't in the business of shaping the overall health care system. Our
goal is to see that the profession has what it needs to provide the best
possible care to its patients. APTA staff is in constant contact with
members of Congress and their staff, along with many administration
officials. We have regular meetings and phone calls with them to make
sure they are aware of the needs of the PT profession. APTA is also a
member of several health care coalitions that are deeply involved in the
health care reform debate.
What You Can Do in Health Care
Reform
APTA encourages our members and their patients to get involved in the
debate. There are a multitude of avenues you can take to get your voice
heard. You can write, call, or fax your Congressman or Senator using our
Legislative Action Center. You can
encourage your patients to do the same by having them visit the Patient Action Center (www.apta.org/patientaction).
You can also attend a White House Regional Summit or take part in a town
hall meeting with your member of Congress.

What the Government is Doing in Health
Care Reform
The Senate Finance Committee has taken the lead in the debate for
health care reforms. A health care reform bill will most likely
originate in the Senate Finance Committee. Chairman Baucus and Senator
Grassley (Ranking Republican member) are two of the most proactive
members of the Senate in regards to health care reform. In the U.S.
House of Representatives, the Ways and Means and Energy and Commerce
committees will lead any debate in the House, but will most likely,
allow the Senate Finance Committee; along with Senate Health, Education,
Labor, and Pensions (HELP); to propose any health care reform
legislation. The President, the Secretary of Health and Human Services,
and the White House Director on Health Care Reform will work with
Congress to try and get their priorities included in any bills that they
may pass.
