Medicare requires that the professional therapist (the PT) provide line-of-sight supervision of physical therapist assistant (PTA )student services.  Federal Register (Volume 64, Number 213)

4 3: Although not specifically addressed in the regulations, the Part A hospital diagnosis related group (DRG) payment system is similar to that of a skilled nursing facility (SNF). Thus, if state laws do not specify requirements, it is reasonable to use the SNF Part A requirements as guidance.

X 1: According to program memorandum AB-01-56, Medicare does not reimburse for student services provided under Medicare Part B. However, in a letter to the American Speech-Hearing-Language Association (ASHA), Medicare clarified that the service would be billable even though the student is participating in the delivery of the service as long as "the qualified practitioner is directing the service, making the skilled judgment, and is responsible for the assessment and treatment."
