Foundation Funding Recipients 2006

Research Grants

Burke Gurney, PT, PhD, of the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, was awarded a one-year $40,000 Magistro Family Foundation Research Grant for his project titled “Absorption of Dexamethasone in Connective Tissue of Humans Using Iontophoresis.”

Craig J. Newsam, DPT, from the Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center in Downey, CA, was awarded a one-year $40,000 Foundation Research Grant for his project “Strengthening Exercises to Reduce Shoulder Pain in Persons with Tetraplegia.” Newsam's grant is funded by the fundraising efforts of physical therapy students in the Pittsburgh-Marquette Challenge

Barbara M. Quaney, PT, PhD, from the University of Kansas Medical Center Research Institute, was awarded a one-year $40,000 Magistro Family Foundation Research Grant for her project titled “The Effect of Electrical Stimulation on Grasping Function in Individuals with Chronic Stroke.”

Foundation Funding Recipients 2005

Michael C Schubert PT, MS, PhD, assistant professor, Johns Hopkins University, received a one-year, $40,000, research grant in support of his project, "Mechanisms of Gaze Stability in Recovery of Dynamic Visual Acuity."

Richard McAvoy, PT, Strafford Health Alliance, received a one-year, $40,000 research grant in support of his project, "A Comparison of Aquatic and Land-based Therapy vs. Land Therapy on the Outcome of Total Knee Arthroplasty."

McMillan doctoral scholarships of $5,000 each in support of post-professional doctoral students in their first year of graduate studies towards a doctorate were awarded to:

Erika Nelson-Wong, PT, MSPT, tDPT, University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
Wendy J. Sanchez, PT, MS, Ohio State University

PODS I scholarships of $7,500 each are awarded to physical therapists who have completed at least 2 full semesters or 3 full quarters of their coursework toward a doctorate. Recipients of the 2005 PODS I scholarships were:

Hong was also the recipient of the Barnes-Leahy Doctoral Scholarship, available to physical therapists to fund post-professional doctoral studies in neurology. The recipient is selected from applicants who are awarded a PODS I scholarship. The Barnes-Leahy Doctoral Scholarship is generously funded by the Neurology Section.

PODS II scholarships of $15,000 each are awarded to physical therapists who have been formally admitted to doctoral candidacy. Recipients of the 2005 PODS II scholarships were:

Schmitt was also the recipient of the Viva J Erickson Scholarship, available to physical therapists to fund post-professional doctoral studies to prepare for academic leadership of physical therapy education programs. The recipient is selected from applicants who are awarded a PODS I or PODS II scholarship.
