PECOS: Online Enrollment Resources

In December 2008, CMS implemented an online process for Medicare enrollment through the Provider Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System (PECOS). This process would allow most providers and suppliers to enroll in the Medicare program or make changes to their Medicare enrollment information via the Internet rather than through the paper form. The online enrollment process is designed to simplify the enrollment process for providers and suppliers as well as reduce the time it takes for a contractor to process the Medicare enrollment application. By the end of 2009, CMS anticipates that providers and suppliers in all settings (private practices, facilities, and institutional providers) will be able to complete the enrollment process online. DMEPOS suppliers will be able to use the PECOS system in 2010.

National Provider Identifier
The NPI is a 10-digit numeric identifier that will be a requirement for all individual health care providers who meet the definition of a "covered entity" under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Starting May 23, 2008, Medicare will reject claims that include provider numbers other than the NPI.
