Process for Becoming a Credentialed Clinical Trainer
Course Description and Expectations
The voluntary APTA Clinical Instructor Education and Credentialing
Program (CIECP) is a 3-day instructional course. Training is based on
adult and active experiential learning approaches and focuses on
participants' ability to teach and administer Parts I and II of the
CIECP. Participants are presumed to have a command of didactic content
related to clinical teaching, supervision, and evaluation upon entering
this course. By the end of the course, participants are
expected to demonstrate familiarity with content contained within the
standard CIECP and to competently manage the Assessment Center, teach
selected content by integrating active teaching strategies to different
levels of learners, and to demonstrate the ability to independently
conduct the APTA CIECP. The Clinical Instructor Education
Board (CIEB) makes the final decision regarding the awarding of Clinical
Trainer credentials for an initial three-year period. This decision is
based on successfully meeting established criteria as reflected by
faculty evaluations, ability of candidates to accurately self-assess,
and the attainment of performance criteria.
Process
Individuals who elect to submit applications are reviewed by the CIEB
based on established criteria. Applicants are invited to
attend a Train-the-Trainer Course based on satisfactorily meeting the
established criteria. Participants are awarded 2.25 CEUs for this
course from APTA.
Following the completion of this course, all participants are
reviewed by the CIEB to determine credentialed trainer status based on
assessments of their performance. Credentialed Trainers who
successfully complete the course are able to independently provide the
CI Education and Credentialing Program for academic programs,
consortia's, clinical sites, or other sponsors on
request. Coordination, planning, and scheduling of these
programs are negotiated directly with the Credentialed Trainer. A
national database tracks all people who are Credentialed Trainers and
Credentialed CIs.
Materials used to develop the Trainer Course and the CI Education and
Credentialing Program were based on a grant provided by APTA under the
direction of principal investigator Michael Emery, and with
co-investigators Nancy Peatman and Lynn Foord-May and with the support
of the New England Consortium of Academic Coordinators of Clinical
Education. This grant was completed with a final report
submitted to the APTA Board of Directors in February 1996.
