Nominations Currently Being Accepted for ABPTS and Specialty Council Positions

The American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS), which is the governing body for certification and recertification for clinical specialists in physical therapy, is accepting nominations for three board-certified physical therapist, one in Cardiovascular and Pulmonary, Clinical Electrophysiologic and one in Women's Health physical therapy (4 year term) on ABPTS. These appointments begin July 1, 2010.

Members of ABPTS may not concurrently hold a primary APTA section office that could present a conflict of interest between the two groups. Also, although Specialty Council experience is preferred, it is not required for appointment to ABPTS.

The ABPTS also appoints members of its Specialty Councils, which are composed of three board-certified physical therapist members. Nominations are being accepted for one position on each of the following Specialty Councils: Cardiovascular and Pulmonary, Clinical Electrophysiologic, Geriatric, Orthopaedics, Pediatrics, and Women's Health physical therapy. Specialty Council appointments are for 4-year terms beginning January 1, 2011.

Individuals seeking appointment to ABPTS and the Specialty Councils must have the following qualifications:

  1. Board-certified physical therapist in the specialty area.
  2. Effective group participation.
  3. Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner.
  4. We encourage you to review the requirements and responsibilities required of appointed members of ABPTS and Specialty Councils.

The deadline for submitting nominations is March 31, 2010. ABPTS will make all appointments during its May 2010 meeting. Nominees are required to submit a current curriculum vitae along with the nomination consent form.

You can also download a copy of the nomination form. If you have any questions please call 800/999-2782, x8520, or e-mail Spec-Cert@apta.org. Nomination forms and curriculum vitae can be faxed to 703/706-8186.
