Tips for Job Seekers

Postings on PT Bulletin Online’s Job Bank fall into the following two categories:

Agency placement —The individual/company placing the posting has been retained to assist the employer in locating qualified candidates and will be paid a fee by the employer for the placement. You will NOT be employed by the agency posting the position.

Company placement —The individual/company placing the posting will employ you for this position. No third party (placement agency) is involved in the candidate selection process.

Require that any employment agency or individual recruiter with whom you contract inform you before submitting your resume to an employer. When this practice is not followed, confusion results between the hiring facility and the agency, which may negatively affect whether or not you are extended an offer. Make it clear that if you find that the agency has submitted your resume without your knowledge, you will end your relationship with that agency.

Always read any employment or travel contract thoroughly and ask for clarification as needed. It’s critical that you have a clear understanding of benefits, housing, bonuses, and any penalties incurred if the employment contract is terminated early.

Don’t seek or accept tax, per diem, or reimbursement advice from an employment agency. These questions are better referred to your accountant or attorney who understands your complete financial situation.

Before entering a contract with an agency, inquire about its credentials and reputation. Number of years in business, specifically recruiting physical therapists; ownership information; and client/candidate references are valuable tools you can use to select reputable placement agencies. In addition, ask your colleagues about agencies with which they have worked.

Beware of any recruiter who uses overly aggressive tactics, threats, or intimidation, or who exhibits unprofessional behavior.
