Medicare 2009: What's New for Physical Therapy

Expert Speakers:

Gayle R Lee, JD, has more than 10 years of experience working on health care issues that affect the rehabilitation industry. Lee is the director of federal payment policy and advocacy for the American Physical Therapy Association. As the department's federal payment policy expert, Lee is primarily responsible for issues involving Medicare, Medicaid, HIPAA, and CHAMPUS. She specifically works on regulations that affect physical therapists practicing in skilled nursing facilities, home health agencies, rehabilitation hospitals/units, comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation facilities, rehabilitation agencies, and private practice settings. She also has worked at the American Rehabilitation Association, where she was assistant counsel and policy coordinator.

Rhea Cohn, PT, DPT, a physical therapist with more than 30 years experience, has worked extensively on coding and payment policy issues impacting rehabilitation. She has worked in a variety of clinical settings including acute care hospitals, outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation settings. Following her clinical work, she spent four years as a Utilization Management Coordinator at a major mid-Atlantic managed care organization. Cohn spent over 12 years at the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) building relationships with payers, functioning as the staff advisor to the AMA CPT Editorial Panel, representing APTA on the NCQA non-physician advisory committee, commenting on private and public payment policies and developing educational initiatives for members and external stakeholders. At the time of her departure, she was the Director of Private Payment Policy and Advocacy. Currently, Rhea is the Director of Workers Compensation Business Operations at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, DC.

Changes to the Medicare program, which go into effect in 2009, can have a significant impact on physical therapist practice and payment for outpatient therapy services. Find out the latest information on the new 2009 Medicare fee schedule payment rates, the therapy cap, the physician quality reporting initiative (PQRI), the recovery audit contractor program, and more.

Coding and payment policy expert Rhea Cohn, PT, DPT, joins Gayle Lee, JD, APTA's Director of Federal Payment Policy, to provide critical information about Medicare's new rules affecting coverage and payment for physical therapy services in 2009. During a Q&A session following the overview, participants may ask questions directly to the experts.
