Physical Therapists Top "Best Jobs" List, Again...
Physical therapists ranked 7th in a list of 50 "Best Jobs in America" featured in the November issue of CNNMoney.com. The profile features an interview with APTA member Jennifer Gamboa, PT, DPT, OCS, and examines education requirements, job satisfaction, and salary estimates. APTA is also cited for explanation for the growing demand for the profession.

Aging Population and Injured Military Create High Demand for Physical Therapists
The high demand for physical therapists was examined in a September 24 article of BusinessWeek. Citing an aging population and injured military service returning from two overseas wars, the article described the physical therapy profession as "soaring." APTA members Julie Keysor, PT, PhD, and Jennifer Gamboa, PT, DPT, OCS, were cited in the article.

08/24/09: APTA member Joanna Goldin, PT, was featured in an article in the The Denver Post about her role in keeping professional tennis players on the court. She discusses common tennis-related injuries and tips on how weekend warrior players may avoid them.


09/08/09: APTA member Cara Brickley, PT, was the featured JobDoc profile in the Business Section of the Boston Globe in September. She discusses her career choice being inspired from her father, a Vietnam veteran, and his experience with physical therapy. Brickley also discusses the role of today's physical therapist as part of a larger medical team. The article examines the positive projected growth for the profession, as well as the educational requirements.


08/27/09: APTA member David Shulman, PT, was featured in an article in the Baltimore Sun about the role he plays in helping professional musicians stay healthy. As a musician himself, Shulman has developed a niche in his Baltimore-area practice to help treat and prevent the numerous injuries that come with playing an instrument full-time.


08/20/09: APTA member Mary Ann Wilmarth, PT, DPT, OCS, MTC, was featured in an article in the New York Times about backpack safety. She advises readers that children should carry no more than 15% of their bodyweight on their backs, otherwise they risk injury to their back and shoulders. Additionally, APTA has been cited as a resource on backpack safety at MSN's Mom's Homeroom and at Courage Center.


08/01/09: APTA member Marilyn Moffat, PT, DPT, PhD, FAPTA, was featured in the July/August issue of AARP Magazine in an article about effective treatments for low back pain. She addresses proper treatment of chronic pain and dispels dated notions that patients should remain sedentary for recovery.


07/23/09: APTA member Raymond Cralle, PT, was featured on GI Radio to discuss the benefits of neurological rehabilitation and hyperbaric oxygen treatment for wounded veterans. 05/19/09: Physical therapy was identified as a top alternative to prescription pain medicine for treatment of pain relief in a msnbc.com article. Physical therapists were promoted as the health care professionals to seek when looking for an exercise plan to treat chronic pain as well as APTA's Find a PT database.


05/12/09: APTA member Joanna Ferrara, PT, is featured in a New York Daily News article for her Dancing Dreams program for children with cerebral palsy and physical disabilities. Ferrara, who sees the children for regular physical therapy, formed the dance program to provide these children with an opportunity to participate in the same activities as their peers.


05/07/09: APTA members Jake Magel, PT, DSc, OCS, FAAOMP, and Susan McLaughlin, PT, are featured in a series of Deseret News articles (May 7, May 9, and May 14) promoting their hotline on low back pain and incontinence. Magel and McLaughlin discussed the role of physical therapists for treating low back pain and pelvic floor issues, and how physical therapy can help people avoid medicine or surgery.


05/01/09: APTA member Raquel Perlis, PT, was featured in the May issue of More Magazine discussing the role of physical therapists in the treatment of pelvic prolapse. The article mentions physical therapists who are specialized in treatment of women's health issues and encourages readers to visit APTA's Section on Women's Health Web site to find a physical therapist.


04/27/09: The role of physical therapist prescribed exercise and treatment to improve balance and decrease falls is discussed on NPR’s Morning edition.


04/13/09: Physical therapy is touted throughout a Making a Difference feature on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams. The segment addresses a surgical intervention available only for specific and certain children with cerebral palsy. The role of physical therapy for children with cerebral palsy is portrayed as an integral part of treatment before, during, and after surgery.


04/12/09: APTA member Nancy Byl, PT, PhD, FAPTA, was featured on San Francisco's local ABC network to discuss the latest technology out of the University of California San Francisco's Therapy Center. The Alter-G, originally used for training by astronauts, is the Center's latest treatment that encases the lower body in a balloon that reduces body weight and helps patients restore strength while walking or running. Dr. Byl uses the equipment to assist in treatment neurological patients.


04/01/09: APTA member Peggy Brill, PT, OCS, was featured on Oprah Radio, and interviewed by Dr. Mehmet Oz about staying fit and healthy and her book, "The Core Program: Fifteen Minutes a Day that Can Change Your Life." Dr. Oz discusses the expertise of physical therapists in keeping people healthy and Brill addresses the importance of exercise and posture.


03/23/09: APTA member Julie Ann McCarthy, DPT, was featured on San Francisco's local ABC network show, "View from the Bay," to discuss and demonstrate safe exercises for pregnant women.


03/23/09: In a Today Show segment on back pain, physical therapy was touted as the optimal treatment for back pain. A featured patient discussed benefits of physical therapy and being taught how to manage the pain through exercises she could do at home.


03/10/09: APTA member and Center for Rehab Services CEO Paul A Rockar, Jr, PT, DPT, MS, is featured in a March television segment on Pittsburgh's WTAE-TV (Channel 4) about the benefits of Direct Access for physical therapist services. Rockar stresses the team concept by saying "that it is important for every physical therapist and consumer to realize that we are still a part of the team and the physician is there for us to consult and send them on."


03/04/09: Physical therapists aren't among those affected by the economic downturn, according to a March Washington Post article. The article features a physical therapist and emphasizes that careers in healthcare, specifically physical therapy, continue grow despite the country's employment crisis. 


02/24/09: APTA members John Groves, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT, and Dan Dyrek, PT, DPT, MS, are featured in a February Yahoo! article about the rehabilitation of baseball player Corey Koskie following a neck injury. The cutting-edge work of Groves has provided Koskie relief from debilitating pain since an injury that halted his career more than two years ago.


02/22/09: APTA member Holly Silvers, PT, was featured in a Kansas City Star article on ACL injury prevention. She discusses the significant injury reduction rate prevention programs have as well as the minimal time and costs to teams to implement.


02/21/09: APTA member William McCormick, PT, is featured in a Portland Press Herald article about opening a niche gym facility to bridge the gap between medical care and traditional fitness training. Physical therapists and doctors will be able to design individual programs for patients and monitor their results. Gwen Simmons, PT, PT, JD, OCS, FAAOMPT, president of the Maine Chapter of APTA, was also featured in this article.


02/19/09: A study from the January issue of PTJ, APTA's scientific journal, was the featured resource in a February 19, Reuters Health article about easing lower back pain. The article cited the study findings that motor control exercises can help lower back pain. Motor control exercises focus on teaching patients to control specific deeper muscles in the back and abdomen that move and support the spine.


02/16/09: The relationship between a patient and their physical therapist is examined in a article in the New York Times. The author describes the unique camaraderie and rapport often developed between the physical therapist and their patient.


02/15/09: APTA members Charlie Ridgeway, PT, Ron Courson, PT, and Tim McMahon, PT, OCS, are featured in Atlanta Journal Constitution articles ("PTs Help Athletes Stay in the Game" and "Helping Weekend Warriors Stay in the Game") examining physical therapy as a part of sports medicine. The physical therapists discussed the unique treatment plans for patients, whether they were college competitive or weekend warriors.


02/12/09: ABC News article stresses the importance of posture featured guidelines for good posture developed by APTA.


02/09/09: A physical therapist is featured in a career profile in the New York Times.


02/02/09: APTA members Col Barbara Springer, PT, and Nikki Butler, PT, MPT, OCS, are featured in a Washington Post article about the physical toll heavy equipment is taking on soldiers. Springer and Butler discuss the leading injuries that affect soldiers, and how the Army is now deploying physical therapists with combat brigades to help keep soldiers healthy.


01/22/09: Washington State PTs rallied to defend spinal manipulation. About 625 physical therapists descended on the Capitol building in Olympia, WA, to defend legislation that would allow spinal manipulation in their scope of practice. Their impressive lobbying efforts caught the attention of both the Seattle Times and the Olympian. Washington is one of only two states that don't include spinal manipulation in the PT's scope of practice.


12/11/08: Citing the two national job satisfaction surveys, U.S. News & World Report added physical therapists to their list of best careers for 2009. Despite a weakened economy, predictions see an increase in job supply as the baby boomer generation ages and physical therapists will be in more demand.


11/30/08: APTA member Brita Grothe, PT, was featured in the November 30 issue of Washington Post Magazine in an article about a teen with dwarfism who underwent surgery to have her legs lengthened. The article mentions physical therapy throughout as part of the procedure's process.


11/19/08: A study featured in the November issue of Physical Therapy was the basis for an article about the benefits of resistance training for glucose levels in diabetics. The article profiled a woman with diabetes who has benefited in weight loss and better diabetes control through a program that includes resistance training, as the study indicates. APTA member Wylene Watts, PT, discusses the importance of activity for people with diabetes, including the benefits such as increased energy and lowering blood sugar levels.


11/11/08: Local television and newspapers in Pomona, California covered the return of Marine Sgt Josh Cooley to his home in Florida on Veterans Day following two years of rehabilitation, including physical therapy, at Casa Colina Hospital for a severe brain injury. KTLA-TV and the Daily Bulletin featured interviews with APTA member Stephanie Kaplan, PT, DPT, who was Cooley's head physical therapist. Kaplan played a major role in the rehabilitation that has helped the Purple Heart recipient relearn to walk and talk after medical experts predicted he would never be able to do so.


11/03/08: A study from the November issue of APTA's scientific journal Physical Therapy was featured in "Booster Shots," the healthcare blog of the LA Times on November 3. APTA member and the study's lead research Robin Marcus, PT, PhD, OCS, discusses how an exercise program combining aerobics with resistance training showed better results for diabetics than aerobics alone. Improvements included better glucose control, lean thigh tissue, and lower overall body mass index.


10/13/08: APTA member Holly Silvers, PT, was featured in an October 13 article in the New York Times about programs designed for female athletes to decrease the risk of ACL injuries. Silver's program and research were cited in the article, as well as APTA's Consumer Web site as a resource for a sample of exercises.


10/11/08: APTA was featured in a US News & World Report article (October 11) for its support of a "Call to Action" by the U.S. Surgeon General to reduce the number of cases of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). APTA member Susan Scherer, PT, was cited as a DVT expert and offered readers tips to avoid the risks of DVT.


10/07/08: In a series dedicated to back pain, NBC Nightly News discusses physical therapy as a top alternative to surgery. The October 7 segment includes an interview with an orthopedic surgeon who recommends patients consider physical therapy rather than going under the knife. The segment also cites research in which patients report equal satisfaction and results with physical therapy as with surgery.


10/03/08: MisFits columnist Howard Schneider of The Washington Post examines the common problems related to the shoulder joint as he documents his personal injury and recovery through physical therapy. APTA member Richard Jackson, PT, OCS, is featured in an accompanying piece providing advice on resistance exercises for the shoulder.


09/30/08: APTA member Holly Silvers, PT, MPT, was featured September 30 in "Booster Shots," the healthcare blog of the LA Times, discussing the importance of specific warm up exercises to prevent ACL injuries for female athletes. Citing research from the Journal of Sports Medicine, Silvers discusses the need to spread the word about proper injury prevention programs throughout communities, including those without the funds to implement such programs.


09/19/08: APTA member Julie Wong, PT, was featured on ABC-affiliate KGO-TV, San Francisco, about her innovations in therapy for patients with breast cancer. The September 19 story highlights how Bay Area surgeons and doctors are turning to her expertise on how patients can best recover from breast cancer surgeries.


09/11/08: A new study published in the September 11 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine questioning the usefulness of arthroscopic surgery for osteoarthritis of the knee should encourage patients to consider physical therapy as an effective non-surgical option. Stories on the study have run in The LA Times, USA Today, The Washington Post, US News and World Report, and The Wall Street Journal, and also aired on NBC Nightly News.


08/19/08: Research about Kinesio athletic tape by APTA members Mark D Thelen, PT, OCS, SCS, James A Dauber, PT, DPT, OCS, SCS, and Paul D Stoneman, PT, PhD, OCS, was featured in a New York Times Health blog. A popular item in the Beijing Olympics, the tape and its efficacy with shoulder injuries was the focus of their study, published in the July issue of the Journal of Orthopedic & Sports Physical Therapy.


08/06/08: APTA member Judy Towne Jennings, PT, MA, addresses the importance of "tummy time" for infants in an August 6, 2008, LA Times article and an August 9 Newsweek article. Jennings discusses developmental, cognitive, and organizational skill delays, eye-tracking problems, and behavioral issues for infants who spend too much time on their backs. APTA member Colleen Coulter-O'Berry, PT, co-author of the "Tummy-Time Tools" brochure, is quoted about the health issue in a Reuters article, as featured on MSNBC.com, August 14.


07/03/08: APTA members Jan Anderson, PT, and Keith Kleven, PT, are featured in a July 3 Washington Post article about the powerful effect golf swings can have on the body. Anderson discusses the importance of warming up and how the balance of strength and flexibility plays an important role in one's golf game.


07/02/08: APTA member Jason Hux, PT, addresses proper body mechanics of a golf swing in a July 2 article in the Savannah Morning News. Hux discusses the importance of flexibility and the need for such issues to be addressed before an injury occurs.


06/23/08: In a June 23 article in the LA Times, APTA member Lynn Snyder Mackler, PT, ScD, SCS, FAPTA, discusses her research, which finds that patients who undergo total knee replacement often adopt a forward-bending way of going from sitting to standing that can increase strain on the non-injured leg. The problematic motion, which can lead to future injuries, can be prevented by seeking treatment from a physical therapist.


06/17/08: APTA member and president of the Orthopaedic section's Foot and Ankle SIG Stephen Paulseth, PT, DPT, MS, SCS, was featured in a June 17 article in the Washington Post about the effects of different footwear on the foot. The article examines recent research on the implications of high heels and sandals.


06/13/08: With about one month to go before the current exceptions process for therapy above the Medicare therapy caps expires, a majority of the US House of Representatives has endorsed legislation to repeal the arbitrary financial limit on therapy benefits. What is at risk for Medicare beneficiaries is discussed in this June 13 article in The Hill.


06/12/08: APTA member Stanley Paris, PT, PhD, FAPTA, discusses his quest to become the oldest person to swim across the English Channel in a June 12 online article with US News & World Report. Paris hopes to accomplish this feat, which he did once before at the age of 49, while raising funds for physical therapy research.


05/26/08: APTA member Eric Johnson, PT, discusses the implications of falls on the quality of life for the elderly, as well as the fear in can instill in some, in a May 26 article in the Los Angeles Times. Johnson and other health care experts weigh-in on what is the leading cause of injury death of senior citizens.


05/13/08: APTA member Lynn Snyder-Mackler, PT, ScD, SCS, FAPTA, warns against waiting too long before knee replacement surgery in a May 13 article in the New York Times. She discusses the concerns of rehabilitation proving to be harder for the patient and lack of a full recovery. Her research, featured in the fall issue of The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, is also mentioned for its finding that woman experience higher levels of impairment than men before surgery.


05/11/08: APTA member Holly Silvers, PT, evaluates the body mechanics of athletes and describes how basic human form places females at higher risk for ACL injuries in an article in New York Times Magazine. Silvers discusses how specific training programs can help deter these athletes from career ending knee injuries.


05/07/08: The Washington Post reports on a study published in the Pediatric Physical Therapy journal about bone health for girls. Research from the Louisiana State University Health Science Center-Shreveport shows weight bearing sports such as soccer build better bone density than other sports such as swimming. APTA member James W Bellew, PT, EdD, is featured discussing the study and the importance of building bone density during adolescent years.


04/05/08: Leah Fleisher, PT, daughter of pianist Leon Fleisher, was featured on NPR in a piece about how core strengthening exercises and stretching techniques help musicians with overuse injuries.


04/04/08: According to research by IBISWorld, college graduates ready to become physical therapists will find jobs available, both this year and in the future. That's why physical therapist is among the "Hot Jobs" listed by London's Earth Times (April 1, 2008). "Physical Therapy will drive job growth for years to come as aging Baby Boomers, as well as high school, college, and professional athletes often require extended periods of therapy to recover from painful injuries," IBISWorld Senior analyst George Van Horn says.


02/25/08: Women who experience painful sex may receive relief from treatment by a physical therapist. An ABC story details how Raquel Perlis, PT, teaches women and their partners how to stretch and massage pelvic floor muscles. She also uses biofeedback, which visually displays the degree of muscle contractions on a computer screen. The need for this therapy is so great, Perlis has a 3-month backlog of patients and manages 10 women a day for painful sex, the article says.


01/27/08: The Chicago Tribune reports a large contingent of physical therapists and physicians are advising parents of the dangers of strap-in chairs and carriers that may contribute to misshapen skulls, contorted neck muscles, and delayed motor skills in infants. In the January 27 article, PTs recommend more "tummy time" on the ground in order for proper muscle development.


01/25/08: According to economists, physical therapist is among the careers likely to remain strong despite a possible recession in 2008, says a January 25 article on Yahoo HotJobs.


01/23/08: As reported January 23 in the New York Times, a 4 week clinical trial for a stroke rehabilitation device has proved that vigorous physical therapy alone is best treatment for stroke patients. The president of the company that manufactures the device told analysts the trial might have demonstrated "the value of providing aggressive physical therapy for all stroke victims."


01/08/08: The New York Times features APTA members Marilyn Moffatt, PT, DPT, PhD, FAPTA, and Carole B Lewis, PT, PhD, GCS, FAPTA, addressing the hidden health concern of balance in the Health section's Personal Health column of January 8.


12/18/07: APTA members May Kesler, PT, and Jan Dommerholt, PT, were featured in the Washington Post's December 18 "MisFits" fitness column for their advice to a reader about a reader's stiff joints and muscles.


12/17/07: APTA member Keith Klevin, PT, was featured in a San Diego Union Tribune article about his referrals amongst professional athletes. Klevin, longtime PT of golfer Tiger Woods, is now treating San Diego Padres pitcher Chris Young after the recommendation of teammate and fellow pitcher Greg Maddux.


12/16/07: APTA members Steve Barbuto, PT, and Julie Gumestad, PT, were featured in a Seattle Post Intelligencer article about the importance of proper posture.


12/12/07: APTA member Robert Ortmayer, PT, has played a pivotal role in getting champion Funny Car racer John Force back on the track after injuries resulting from a crash, as detailed in an article on the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Web site.


11/25/07: USA Weekend HealthSmart columnist Dr. Tedd Mitchell, MD, describes how a physical therapist can alleviate back pain by strengthening muscles in the lower back. "Too often, back-pain sufferers see physical therapy as a 'quick fix,'" Mitchell writes. "But for this chronic condition, physical therapy is so much more. It takes time to learn the mechanics of how the back operates and how it should be supported."


11/19/07: APTA member Joann Ferrara, PT, was featured on NBC's Today Show for her ballet program for girls with cerebral palsy or other muscle disorders.


10/16/07: After surgery for breast cancer, Bridget Dietz, PT, turned to her coworkers for rehabilitation for lymphedema. In an article in The Huntsville Times, Dietz praises physical therapy for its role in her recovery from the "miserable experience" of chemotherapy. "With physical therapy, you get back to doing what you love to do much quicker and have a much better quality of life," Dietz said.


09/23/07: In a CNN.com article, neurologist Anne Louise Oaklander, director of the nerve injury unit at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, said physical therapy may be the "best choice" for chronic pain related to an orthopaedic problem.


09/14/07: APTA member Elliot Greenberg, PT, DPT, was featured on "The Martha Stewart Show" for his role in her recovery from hip replacement surgery. Stewart singled out Greenberg for his expertise and professionalism as well as to acknowledge the importance of physical therapy for the procedure. Stewart said that in recovery it was important to have physical therapy "every single day that was possible." 09/01/07: APTA members Mary Ann Wilmarth, PT, DPT, OCS, MTC, and Patrice Winter PT, MPT, MS, FAAOMPT, are featured in a September 2007 Real Simple article (.pdf - 6 MB) addressing the importance of "lightening your load."


08/31/07: Demonstrating that one is always on the front line when serving in Iraq, APTA member Army Major Erica Clarkson, PT, is the subject of an August 31 NBC News piece that includes video from the regular NBC Nighly News segment "A Soldier's Story." In the features, Clarkson discusses the many scenarios and situations she faces as a physical therapist serving her country.


07/29/07: After a potential career-ending knee injury, Shaun Livingston of the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers developed a new outlook while going through physical therapy with APTA member Mark Takesue, PT, MPT, OCS, as featured in a July 29 Los Angeles Times article.


07/23/07: APTA member and Education Section President Diane Jette, PT, DSc, is featured in a July 23 MarketWatch article about second careers in the booming healthcare job market. She discusses the importance of exposure to the physical therapy profession prior to committing to a educational program and the variety of settings in which physical therapists can work.


07/15/07: APTA member Cora Maglaya, PT, ATC, CSCS, discusses the rehabilitative treatment for the feet of modern dancers who participate in the an annual dance festival in a July 15 Durham Herald-Sun article. Citing overuse as the reason for the multiple tendon injuries, ligament sprains and other foot problems, she says many of the dancers attempt "too much, too soon" when enrolling in dance festivals.


06/29/07: APTA member Margot Miller, PT, President of the Section on Orthopaedics' Occupational Health Special Interest Group, was featured in the June 29 ABCnews.com story, "The Pain of Staying Connected." Margot discusses repetitive stress injury associated with handheld devices such as the BlackBerry and the new iPhone.


06/06/07: APTA member Lori Monson, PT, was featured in a June 6 interview with National Public Radio (NPR) for the segment, "How to Save Your Life," by host/neurosurgeon Dr. Phillip Stieg. Munson discussed a variety of issues including how physical therapy can improve your life, injury prevention, low back pain, elderly falls, insurance issues, and much more.


05/20/07: APTA member Bill Case, PT, addresses the importance of correct posture in a National Geographic Kids feaure. He discusses how poorly-balanced backpacks and slouched shoulders while playing video games and at the computer, all contribute to bad posture and evenutally back pain.


05/16/07: APTA member Matt Wanex, PT, was the subject of a career profile in the Business section of the Baltimore Sun. A sports injury was the inspiration for the one-time biology major to switch to physical therapy. As a staff physical therapist at Greater Baltimore Medical Center, his work ranges from pediatrics to oncology, and he helps patients recover from strokes, heart attacks and hip replacement surgeries.


04/21/07: The intensive role of physical therapy in the recovery of New Jersey Governor Jon S Corzine is outlined by physical therapists in an April 21 article featured in USA Today. APTA members Kevin Gard, PT, DPT, OCS, Tom Kiger, PT, and Kathleen O'Donnell, PT, discuss the governor's long road to recovery from injuries sustained in a car crash earlier this month.


04/17/07: The results are in, and physical therapists report one of the highest job-satisfaction levels in the country! So says a recent National Opinion Research Center survey, which was chronicled in an April 17 article of the Chicago Tribune. With more than three-quarters of physical therapists polled reporting to be "very satisfied" with their occupations, PTs were second only to clergy, and were the only health care professionals in the top 5.


04/17/07: CNN.com highlighted a May 2006 Health article providing "5 fixes to help you stand up to back pain." Featured in the article is the advice of APTA member Sherry Brourman, PT. Brourman says that walking properly can help aid back pain. Her advice includes to "unlock your knees and concentrate on keeping both your ribs and your pelvis 'stacked.'" She says that and other tips should be practiced "four times a day for five minutes until stance feels natural."


04/15/07: Former APTA president Marilyn Moffat, PT, PhD, featured in a Newsweek article about exercise for Baby Boomers. Addressing the potential dangers of injury, former APTA president Marilyn Moffat discusses realistic exercise goals for the baby boomer generation.


04/15/07: In the April 15 issue of PARADE Magazine, physical therapists were found to have one of the six "Hottest Jobs For College Graduates." The magazine cited the aging baby boomer generation behind the increased demand for physical therapist services. This is the second year in a row PARADE has identified these healthcare professionals as having a "hot career." Physical therapists were also featured as one of six in "Hot Jobs in 2006 and Beyond" in the March 12, 2006 issue of the magazine.


04/06/07: The role of physical therapists in restoring mobility and easing pain after a knee replacement surgery was the focus of an April 6 article in The Monitor newspaper in southern Texas. Sisters Amada Gomez and Gualupe Pena and their cousin Maria Elena Garza simultaneously underwent knee replacement surgeries and physical therapy for their varying knee issues. APTA member Robert Huerta, PT, who treats each woman, discusses developing personalized plans for his patients depending on their needs as exercises to do at home.


03/22/07: The role that physical therapists play for women who are on bed rest due to high-risk pregnancies is the subject of a March 22 New York Times article. APTA member Jean Irion, PT, EdD, SCS, ATC, was featured as the leader of a "crusade" teaching "physical therapists nationwide how to create safe exercise programs for pregnant women on bed rest." Also featured was APTA member Cheryl Appel, PT, MS, PCS. In the article, doctors of obstetrics and gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine "recommend that women on bed rest see a physical therapist and, if appropriate, begin a light exercise program."


03/01/07: Former APTA president Marilyn Moffat, PT, PhD, offers tips for musicians to keep fit and avoid letting "boomeritis" affect their music in the March 1 issue of Making Music Magazine. Moffat identifies the five domains of fitness: posture, strength, balance, flexibility, and endurance, and recommends anyone over the age of 50 visits a physical therapist for a baseline assessment.


01/30/07: After a yoga-induced hamstring injury, a physician touts the valuable benefits and lessons of physical therapy in the Washington Post. Susan Okie discusses "recognizing that my physical therapist knew more than I did about what forms of exercise were safe for my back."


01/12/2007: A new approach to health insurance methods at larges companies in Washington state are examined by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ). The article touts the practicality and cost effectiveness of early access to physical therapy services.


01/10/2007: The Beaver County Times highlighted the demand for physical therapists. In the article, APTA president R. Scott Ward, PT, PhD, noted the many workplace settings for PTs, and reviewed the necessary educational requirements. The article was written by a news syndicate service which services 200 newspapers in the US and Canada.


01/01/07: The Los Angeles Times reports runners are turning to gait analysis to improve running techniques and avoid injury. APTA member Irene Davis, PT, discusses how easily stress fractures can occur when shock absorbency is not distributed correctly.
