Component Mentoring

Did you know that APTA’s Members Mentoring Members program is a ready-made tool that can be used for chapter- or section-level mentoring? Chapters, sections, and APTA share many mentoring objectives, including membership recruitment and retention, leadership development, and conveying professional values. Through a mentoring partnership with a component, APTA can provide an established database, easy-to-access online search to find a mentor, the ability to sign up to be a mentor online, the generation of reports specific to a chapter or section that can be used to evaluate outcomes; and nationally, this program can provide mentor recognition, training, and publicity. Partnering chapters or sections would be asked to promote the program at the component level, provide recognition of mentors at chapter or section activities, assist mentors and protégés, measure outcomes specific to the chapter or section, and designate a component-level mentoring liaison to APTA.

Partnering with APTA’s mentoring program can provide a chapter or section with the opportunity to utilize a mentoring infrastructure that is already established, thus avoiding duplication of effort and cost associated with developing a new program. Chapters

  • Illinois
    Independent chapter-level mentoring program in which chapter mentors also are automatically registered as mentors in APTA's "Members Mentoring Members."
  • Minnesota Chapter
    The Minnesota chapter has a mentoring program linking chapter APTA members with student APTA members for mentorship. They assign students each fall (during their first year of PT/PTA school) with a mentor. Mentoring varies from attending conferences together to assisting with observation experiences.
