The American Physical Therapy Association has been approved as an
Authorized Provider by the International Association for Continuing
Education and Training (IACET), 1620 I St NW, Ste 615, Washington, DC
20006. The American Physical Therapy Association has awarded .2 CEU to
participants who successfully complete the program. Provider (#380). The
American Physical Therapy Association is recognized by the BOC Board of
Certification Inc to offer continuing education for Certified Athletic
Trainers. Approved Provider #P1151.
Course Description: This course will provide information on
documenting physical therapy care within the domains of practice,
regulatory, reimbursement, and risk management and explore the elements
of clinical documentation based on the patient/client management model
of the Guide to Physical Therapist Practice. The participants will gain
practical application on documenting medical necessity, skilled level of
care, and progression, and be provided with tips and resources on
defensible documentation.
Upon completion of the course, the participant will be able to:
- Describe typical challenges therapists have in clinical
documentation.
- Identify ways to facilitate efficient and effective documentation
skills.
- Apply the basic components of appropriate clinical documentation
according to APTA's Guidelines for Physical Therapy Documentation.
- Identify the importance of documentation within the realms of
clinical practice, risk management, regulatory, compliance, and
reimbursement requirements.
- Define best practices for documenting patient/client care in
physical therapy.
Course Developers:
Mary Fran Delaune PT, MPT, is presently the Associate
Director, Practice Department for the American Physical Therapy
Association (APTA). In this position, she provides consultation to other
APTA departments and members, liaisons with various external
organizations and contributes to policy development to advance the
practice of physical therapy. Previously, she was the Manager of
Rehabilitation Services at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis,
Maryland. She earned a BS degree in Health Sciences and a Master of
Physical Therapy degree at the University of Sciences in Philadelphia.
Her primary areas of clinical expertise are in orthopedics and acute
care. Currently, she is a Master of Public Health candidate at the
George Washington University.
Anita Bemis-Dougherty, PT, DPT, MAS, received her Bachelor of
Science degree in Physical Therapy at The University of Maryland,
Masters Degree in Administration from The Johns Hopkins University, and
Doctor of Physical Therapy from Widener University. Anita has worked in
tertiary, academic medical institutions which included a variety of
clinical settings including outpatient, acute care and rehabilitation.
Previously, she was the Physical Therapy Manager at the Johns Hopkins
Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. She joined the staff of the American
Physical Therapy Association (APTA) in June, 2006 and is currently an
Associate Director in the Department of Practice.
