Minority Scholarship Award

Thanks to the generosity of many APTA members and supporters, the Minority Scholarship Fund is nearly $400,000. Donations to the Fund can be made in many ways, anytime, throughout the year:

  1. By check or credit card - payable to 'PT Fund' and forwarded to APTA's Department of Minority Affairs.
  2. Membership Check-off
  3. Celebration of Diversity Fundraiser

As the Fund grows each year, more students will benefit. In 1988, one award was given. In 2009, 7 physical therapy students received a Minority Scholarship Fund award for a total of 164 minority physical therapist and physical therapist assistant students.

Seven physical therapist students received $6,000 each. The recipients are:

  • Yanira Figueroa, Sacred Heart University
  • Jeremy Duane Houser, Alabama State University
  • Caroline Kamunge, SUNY Upstate Medical Center
  • Natalie Rose Lopez, University Southern California (USC)
  • Carlos A. Mercedes, Columbia University
  • Adrianna L. Nebedum, Georgia State University
  • Kristina Smith, University of New England

One physical therapist assistant student received $2,500. The recipient is:

Amy Khemara Webb, Martin Community College

The Minority Faculty development Scholarship Award provides doctoral education support for minority faculty members, to acknowledge and reward those who demonstrate commitment to minority services and activities, and show superior achievements in the profession of physical therapy.

In 2009, one faculty member received $8,000. The recipient is:

  • Lisa VanHoose, PT, University of Kansas Medical Center

More information on the Fund can be obtained by contacting the Department of Minority Affairs.

Applications for the 2011 Awards are now available. Deadline for submission is CLOSE OF BUSINESS December 1, 2010.
