| The Department of Minority Affairs' primary responsibility is to provide
resources to assist APTA members to become culturally competent
practitioners and to educate APTA membership and the general public
about the importance of valuing cultural diversity in the profession of
physical therapy and the Association. APTA's Operational
Plan on Cultural Competence is the basis for many of the activities
undertaken by the Association and its components in fostering cultural
diversity.
The Department:
- provides information on: understanding and teaching cultural
competence, membership statistics
on African-American/Black, Asian, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific
Islander, American Indian/Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino members,
available minority speakers, mentoring, health disparities research,
funding minority research, and minority student recruitment and
retention
- interacts with community-based organizations and government and
private agencies
- collaborates with components on activities to increase understanding
of diversity issues, including co-sponsoring workshops at CSM
