Minority Affairs
The Department of Minority Affairs' primary responsibility is to provide resources to assist APTA members to become culturally competent practitioners and to educate APTA membership and the general public about the importance of valuing cultural diversity in the profession of physical therapy and the Association. APTA's Operational Plan on Cultural Competence is the basis for many of the activities undertaken by the Association and its components in fostering cultural diversity.

The Department:

  • provides information on: understanding and teaching cultural competence, membership statistics on African-American/Black, Asian, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, American Indian/Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino members, available minority speakers, mentoring, health disparities research, funding minority research, and minority student recruitment and retention
  • interacts with community-based organizations and government and private agencies
  • collaborates with components on activities to increase understanding of diversity issues, including co-sponsoring workshops at CSM
