APTA at AARP Vegas@50+ Expo, October 22-24, 2009
APTA, working with the Nevada Physical Therapy Association and the
APTA Section on Geriatrics, hosted an extremely successful balance and
falls awareness event at the 2009 AARP Vegas @50+ Expo, October 22-24,
2009, at the Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas. There were 44 volunteers,
including 13 physical therapists, one physical therapist assistant, and
30 students from Touro University and UNLV who conducted the Single Leg
Stance Test for 560 participants!
Each participant received a packet of APTA balance and falls
information and visitors to the booth were offered APTA fact sheets on a
variety of health conditions such as back, neck, and knee pain as well
as falls prevention. Many attendees asked about knee pain, back pain,
frozen shoulder, and even more complex situations such as managing
multiple sclerosis and proper exercise for heart transplant
patients.
APTA's newly branded exhibit display made its debut at the
conference, staff collected testimonials from patients who were eager to
share their physical therapy success stories, and a raffle drawing was
held daily for a copy of "Age-Defying Fitness" by Marilyn Moffat, PT,
DPT, PhD, FAPTA and Carole B. Lewis, PT, PhD, FAPTA.
