Mentoring & Speakers Bureau FAQ

APTA's Members Mentoring Members is an informal and flexible program allowing members to select their mentors and determine the length of the relationship. The member and the mentor fashion the style of the mentoring relationship, and it may range from a single inquiry to long-term. For information on the characteristics of mentors, protégés, and mentoring relationships, see Mentoring Article.

APTA initiated the "Members Mentoring Members" program and Speakers Bureau in December 1997. The directories were first available to members in January 1999. Today, the Members Mentoring Members Directory is available online, as is the Speakers Bureau.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: How do I become a mentor or speaker?
A: First, you must be an APTA member. In addition, the directories are ongoing projects, and you may submit a form to become a mentor or speaker at any time. The database will be updated continually. Forms are available through APTA's Web site at www.apta.org. Or phone Minority Affairs & Women's Initiatives at 800/999-2782, ext 3143.

Q: If I become a mentor, whom will I be mentoring?
A: Because this is members mentoring members, the protégé and mentor both must be APTA members. Protégés may be PTs or PTAs, students, recent graduates, someone thinking about entering a practice specialty, someone seeking advice about advancement in their current practice or education setting or setting up a private practice, a PT practitioner re-entering the profession or facing burnout, clinicians moving into or out of the education arena, and more.

Q: How do I become a protégé? Does APTA match protégés with mentors?
A: Only APTA members may participate as protégés in the Members Mentoring Members program. APTA does not match protégés with mentors--the directory is the resource for members seeking mentors. A member seeking a mentor contacts a prospective mentor directly. The online directory may be searched by PT or PTA, name, state, area of expertise, keyword, or a combination of those criteria. A bound directory, organized by area of expertise and personal statements alphabetically by last name, is also available. Remember, prospective mentors may choose not to enter into a mentoring relationship at the time you contact them. If this occurs, choose another mentor from the directory.

Q: How does a member obtain a mentoring directory?
A: The directory is free and available only to APTA members. The most up-to-date information is available through searching the online directory. Revised bound directories will be made available periodically. Phone Minority Affairs & Women's Initiatives at 800/999-2782, ext 3143, or e-mail johnettemeadows@apta.org to request one.

Q: Does APTA select speakers?
A: No, like the mentoring directory, the speakers bureau directory is the resource from which you choose a speaker. The directory lists speakers by area of expertise and personal statements alphabetically by last name.

Q: How do you obtain a speakers directory?
A: The directory is free to both APTA members and non-members online. Bound directories, revised periodically, are available free to APTA members and for $15 to non-members-- phone APTA's Service Center at 800/999-2782, ext 3395, and order number P-155.
