Expert Speakers:
Cindy Miles, PT, MEd, PCS, has been serving the pediatric
population since 1977. Initially in an acute care hospital setting,
concentrating on pediatrics, sports medicine and orthopedics, then as a
staff member at a local infant and preschool program. Cindy established
her pediatric private practice in 1981; full time in1987. Her current
7000 sq foot fully equipment facility serves over 300 children per week,
ranging in age from birth through young adult. The practice offers
pediatric physical, occupational, speech therapy and special
instruction; as well as fitness programs, swimming lessons, and women's
aqua aerobics. Cindy is a 1977 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh,
School of Health Related Professionals and a 1988 graduate of East
Stroudsburg University with a Master of Education in exercise
physiology. She is currently pursuing Doctoral studies in Pediatrics at
Rocky Mountain University. She is Board Certified by the American Board
of Physical Therapy Specialties as a Pediatric Clinical Specialist.
Cindy has completed the eight week Pediatric Neuro-Developmental
training course and the Advanced Infant course. She has an extensive
continuing education background in pediatrics and orthopedics.
Presently, Cindy is Treasurer of the Pediatric Section of the APTA.
Cindy serves on the Pediatric Section Task Force on Guidelines for
Exercise for Children.
Roshunda Drummond-Dye, Esq, is Associate Director, Payment
Policy and Advocacy at APTA in the Government and Payment Advocacy Unit.
Roshunda comes from the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and
Oncology where she served as Senior Policy Analyst and was responsible
for drafting policy positions, analyzing and researching federal
legislation and regulations in the field of health care, and preparing
testimony, legal briefs and memoranda. She also advised members on
compliance issues and fraud & abuse laws. Prior to joining ASTRO,
Roshunda served as a legislative assistant to U.S. Rep. Sonny Callahan
(R-AL) where she worked on a range of issues including Medicare and
appropriations. She received her law degree from the Southern University
Law Center and completed her undergraduate work at Talladega
College.
Original Audio Conference Description:
Physical therapists prompted by both public and private sector are
beginning to rethink their approach to identifying best practices for
the pediatric population. This audio conference will provide an overview
of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Medicaid
regulations, and billing and practice patterns relating to pediatric
physical therapy settings.
Expert out-patient pediatric physical therapist, Cindy Miles, joins
Roshunda Drummond-Dye, Esq., APTA Associate Director of Payment Policy
& Advocacy, to provide information on the top challenges for
physical therapy specializing in pediatric services. The speakers will
use case studies to present the appropriate methods of coding,
reporting, and collecting for services to payers. The speakers will also
discuss strategies in navigating through your state Medicaid plan,
finding state policies and applying Federal rules to your practice
setting. During the Q & A session following the presentation you may
ask your questions directly to the experts.
Upon completion of the audio conference, you will be able to:
- Identify strategies for successfully managing claim denials and
appeals.
- Eliminate questionable coding and documentation practices to
facilitate processing of your claims.
- Identify strategies when negotiating with insurance companies.
- Identify resources available to facilitate accurate and effective
coding and appropriate reimbursement in all practice settings.
- Apply clinical reasoning and documentation to support medical
necessity of patient care.
- Minimize denials by clearly documenting measurable function in your
initial evaluation, goals, progress reports, and plan of care.
- Navigate through federal and state IDEA and Medicaid laws and
implement the provisions within your practice.

Continuing Education Units: Each registered participant will
receive a Certificate of Attendance to earn .2 CEU or 2 contact hours
after successful completion of a test with a score of 70% or better.
