general scholarship/aid and grant resources available to students. This
list is not all-inclusive and inclusion in this list does not imply
endorsement by APTA. Specific academic institution scholarships and
financial aid are not listed on this site; however you are encouraged to
check with any academic institution about specific financial aid
available to students enrolled within that institution.

FedMoney.org is the most comprehensive FREE full-text online resource on
all U.S. government grants and student financial aid programs.

- Indian
Health Service (IHS) Loan Repayment Program, which exists
under federal law, is accepting applications from qualifying physical
therapists. Applicants who agree to serve for two years at an IHS
facility or under an approved health program are eligible for more than
$22,000 per year in tuition repayment. Further information on

- State Resources for Financial Aid
Most states now have some form of student assistance. These financial
aid programs vary by state. To find out the details of state grants and
loans, students should contact their state agency oherer
college financial aid administrator.
- U.S.
Department of Education Grants
The U.S. Department of Education (ED) is providing nearly $38 billion
this year to states and school districts, primarily through
formula-based grant programs, to improve elementary and secondary
schools and meet the special needs of students. ED is providing about
$2.5 billion to help strengthen teaching and learning in colleges and
other postsecondary institutions and over $4 billion to support
rehabilitation, adult education, research and development, statistics,
and assessment.

Private Scholarship
Resources
- AMBUCS
Awards range from $500 to $1,500 annually. There is one two-year award
in the amount of $6,000. Approximately $150,000 is awarded annually.
Award monies are deposited each semester to the student's credit account
with the financial aid office of the educational institution. Students
must be accepted in an accredited program by the appropriate health
therapy profession authority in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy,
Speech Language Pathology, and Audiology. Assistant programs are not
eligible. Awards are based on financial need, US citizenship, and
commitment to local community, demonstrated academic accomplishment,
character for compassion and integrity, and career objectives. National
AMBUCS(tm), Inc. will accept applications from Mid-January until April
15 annually.

- Gary L Soderberg
Doctor of Physical Therapy Award
This scholarship is provided by the Doctor of Physical Therapy Visionary
Foundation, Inc in honor of Dr. Gary Soderberg, former Program Director
of Creighton University's first US accredited professional Doctor of
Physical Therapy program at Creighton University in Omaha, NE. This
award was initiated in 1996 by three students who graduated from
Creighton University's first professional DPT class. To date more than
$15,000 has been awarded to students from professional DPT Programs.
Scholarship applications are available January 1st of each year. The
deadline for application is March 1st. Students must be in their final
year of study to apply.

External Grant/Research Funding
Resources
- The Health Resources
and Services Administration's (HRSA) Bureau of Health Professions
has programs benefiting schools and health professions training programs
to increase diversity within the health fields. These HRSA grants
provide disadvantaged and under-represented minority students and
faculty opportunities to enhance their academic skills and obtain the
support needed to graduate from health professions schools or faculty
development programs.
- The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)
Preview Guide profiles its discretionary grant programs by
individual bureaus for each fiscal year. The purpose of the Guide is to
provide the general public with a single source of program and
application information related to HRSA's competitive grant
offerings.
- The online Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance gives you
access to a database of all Federal programs available to State and
local governments (including the District of Columbia); federally
-recognized Indian tribal governments; Territories (and possessions) of
the United States; domestic public, quasi-public, and private profit and
nonprofit organizations and institutions; specialized groups; and
individuals. After you find the program you want, contact the office
that administers the program and find out how to apply.
- GrantsNet is an Internet application tool created by
the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Office of Grants
Management and Policy (OGMP) for finding and exchanging information
about HHS and other Federal grant programs. GrantsNet serves the general
public, the grantee community, and grant-makers (i.e. state and local
governments, educational institutions, non-profit organizations, and
commercial businesses).
- National
Institutes of Health (NIH) Grants Page leads to information about
NIH grant and fellowship programs, applying for a grant or fellowship,
research contracts, and loan repayments. The Office of Extramural
Research is the focal point for NIH medical and behavioral research
grant policies, guidelines and funding opportunities.
- Grants.gov
allows organizations to electronically find and apply for competitive
grant opportunities from all Federal grant-making agencies. Grants.gov
is THE single access point for over 900 grant programs offered by the 26
Federal grant-making agencies.
- National
Institutes of Health-Undergraduate Scholarship Program
The NIH Undergraduate Scholarship Program offers competitive
scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are
committed to careers in biomedical research. The program is designed to
improve access to education leading to research careers for those who
have had fewer opportunities than others. The program is primarily
designed to provide an incentive for exceptional scholars to pursue
biomedical research careers at the NIH. NIH Undergraduate Scholarships
will pay up to $20,000 per academic year in tuition, educational
expenses, and reasonable living expenses. Scholarships are awarded for 1
year; recipients may reapply for additional years (not to exceed 4
scholarship years total).
- National Research Council is offering Postdoctoral
Research Awards, Senior Research Awards, Summer Faculty Fellowships,
Davies Teaching Fellowships and Ellison Medical Foundation Fellowships
for research in residence at US Government laboratories. Opportunities
for research in all areas of science and engineering. Postmark deadlines
are: February 1, May 1, August 1 and November 1.

APTA Component Grants
- Section Health Policy and Administration Grant
Program stimulates, encourages and supports research activities that
enhance the body of knowledge related to health policy and clinical
administration in physical therapy. The purposes of the grants are to
provide funding to assist new physical therapist investigators, or
established investigators who are embarking on a new research agenda in
health policy and administration.
