Additional Requirements for Sports Physical Therapy
Residency Programs
All sports physical therapy residency programs
wishing to be credentialed through APTA must meet the APTA?s
?Requirements for Post-professional Clinical Residency or Fellowship
Programs for Physical Therapists" and the following additional
requirements developed through SPTS and APTA.
Admission Requirement
Applicants must possess:
- A current physical therapy licensure in the state of the
residency
- One of the following: a current ATC designation,a current license as
an EMT, or certification as an Emergency Responder
Clinical Practice Hours
A minimum of 1500 hours of clinical practice must be completed
in a variety of settings that allow for at least a 40% sports physical
therapy caseload.
Clinical practice hours must include the following minimums in the
designated areas:
- Sports Physical Therapy Coverage at Athletic Venues: A
minimum of 200 hours
- Mentored Hours: A minimum
of 150 mentored hours. Mentored hours are defined as 1:1
interaction between the student and the specialists, which may include
SCS, OCS, ATC, and/or M.D. with patients that meet the sports
requirement.
Clinical Instructor Interaction - Non-Patient Contact
Hours
A minimum of 75 hours of clinical instructor interaction in
non-patient care time that may include a variety of educational
opportunities, including, but not limited to, case review, didactic
classroom instruction, chat room, problem solving sessions, clinical
rounds, and other planned educational experiences.
Evaluation Methods for Assessing Competence in Sports Physical
Therapy
The Program will use a variety of methods to assess the clinical
competence of the resident or fellow. The resident or fellow must
demonstrate safe and effective patient/client management in a clinical
setting with an examiner present. At a minimum, the following methods of
assessment will be included in the program:
- One written examination
- 4 technique examinations over such topics as rehabilitation
techniques, advanced evaluation techniques, manual therapy techniques as
deemed necessary and specific to each facility.
- One Patient examination in the clinic for each: knee, ankle,
spinal/axial, and upper extremity.
- One Patient examination on-the-field for both contact and
non-contact sports.
- One Patient examination for pre-participation screen.
- One Patient examination for wellness evaluation.
- One Patient examination for functional testing for return to sport
for each: knee, ankle, spinal/axial, and upper extremity.
A Sports Physical Therapy clinical residency program must be based on
the most recent Sports Physical therapy Description of Specialty
Practice (DSP). All components of the DSP, including the research
component must be addressed in the sports physical therapy clinical
residency curriculum.
