PT 2003: The Annual Conference and Exposition of the APTA,
June 18-22, 2003
Abstracts of Papers Accepted for Presentation
Message from the Editor in Chief of Physical Therapy
Presentations at PT 2003 will be made in one of three formats: platform, poster,
or multimedia technology. Contained on this Web site are abstracts of research,
special interest, theory, and multimedia technology presentations that are to
be given at PT 2003.
These abstracts represent diverse topics and viewpoints and serve as a guide
to one aspect of PT 2003 programming. For those not attending the meeting, the
abstracts provide valuable information about the variety of work being done
and the current views and insights being offered by colleagues.
Abstracts are not intended to replace full-length papers; they are glimpses
of work in progress or synopses of completed work. Publication of abstracts
on this Web site does not constitute peer-reviewed publication.
Abstracts are offered on this Web site because authors wanted to present their
work in forums through which they could interact with colleagues or because
article-length versions of their work have not yet been completed. In either
case, the publication of abstracts alerts readers to the research that is being
conducted today and to the people who are actively engaged in particular pursuits.
Only by reading a full-length, peer-reviewed article can you judge the value,
credibility, and usefulness of research.
For many of the authors of the abstracts that appear on this Web site, the
work has only just begun. We congratulate them on their efforts, and await and
encourage full-length articles that can be submitted for review and potential
publication in Physical Therapy or other peer-reviewed journals.

How to Read and Access the Abstracts
Codes in the abstract identification numbers are for “PO” for Poster
Presentation, “PL” for Platform Presentation, and “MT”
for Multimedia Technology Presentation.
“TH,”or “F,” Thursday, Friday, respectively. Example:
PL-100-F=Platform to be presented on Friday.
Research Abstracts were screened by APTA’s Committee for Screening Proposals
and Abstracts for inclusion of the following: purpose, subjects, methods and
materials, analyses, results, conclusions, and funding source. Theory abstracts
were screened by APTA’s Committee for Screening Proposals and Abstracts
for inclusion of the following: theory, phenomenon, purpose, evidence, testable
hypotheses, importance, and funding source. Special Interest abstracts were
screened by APTA’s Annual Conference Program Committee for inclusion of
the following: purpose, description, observations, conclusions, and funding
source. Multimedia Technology abstracts were screened by APTA’s Multimedia
Technology Subcommittee for inclusion of the following: purpose, target audience,
program design, development process, benefits, equipment, and funding source.
All abstracts are unedited and appear exactly as the authors submitted them.
Abstracts can be access through either the author/presenter index or category index.
The schedule of abstract presentations is made available to attendees in the
on-site program, which is indexed by presenting author only. The identification
numbers that appear with the abstracts on this Web site are identical to those
in the on-site program.
Readers should contact authors directly with requests for copies of papers
or for details of their presentation.
