This position:

  • Leads, manages, and provides strategic direction to the research team to implement the association's priorities to advance and promote research and knowledge and improve physical therapist practice. Represents the association with key policy and research audiences. Responsible for member initiatives, developing and implementing programs, and promoting and disseminating research that demonstrates the value of physical therapy. Leads staff to support these efforts, build strategic alliances and provide critical resources, including the data registry
  • Manages annual budget and daily operations of the research department
  • Leads research team in execution of strategic programs and projects by coaching, mentoring and providing supervision
  • Collaborates with federal government affairs staff to develop and foster strategic alliances in research to advance physical therapist research
  • Leads member outreach, education and service in research initiatives, including the physical therapy outcomes registry (presentations, resource materials, member inquiries)
  • Primary association representative to external organizations and partners on workforce development, analysis, and planning
  • Consults with APTA Board and senior staff on strategic initiatives in research
  • Contributes to strategic public policy priorities and initiatives as lead staff for research


  • Advanced degree or equivalent combination of education and related experience; PhD preferred
  • 5-7 years-experience in population health, biostatistics, clinical, or health services research
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated competency in leadership and management
  • Expertise in research, data collection and analysis
  • Knowledge and experience with clinical data registries preferred
  • Strong presentation/public speaking and professional writing skills
  • Ability to represent association and present to a variety of external audiences and stakeholders
