Title: Lead Congressional Affairs Specialist

PRINCIPAL FUNCTIONS
- Represents the association in lobbying efforts directed at the legislative branch of the federal government
- Lead, in consultation and supervision of the senior director, APTA policy agenda and strategy in the areas of health care, budget, appropriations and selected public health initiatives
- Assists the development of policy strategies as it relates to APTA's legislative agenda
- Assists the development of political strategies relating to the advancement of APTA policy
- Monitors federal publications and congressional schedule for opportunities to protect and promote the interests of physical therapy
- Coordinates legislative and political activities with other stakeholder organizations as necessary
- Writes articles for association and departmental publications
- Maintains and oversees federal legislative critical issues
- Develops and writes testimony represented before congressional committees
- Assists in the development of content for federal legislative portion of the APTA Web site
- Attends political events to represent the association
- Responds to member inquiries relating to federal legislative concerns
- Assists with the coordination of APTA's grassroots, including key contacts and federal liaisons
- Represents APTA at meetings related to federal legislative concerns
- Liaison to selected APTA sections
- Assists senior director in responding to inquiries from members of congress and various government agencies
- Speaks to various associations, educational institutions, and APTA sections
- All other duties as required by management related to the orderly, efficient, and safe operation of APTA
QUALIFICATIONS
- Baccalaureate degree required; and advanced degree in health area desirable
- Background demonstrating substantial familiarity with federal government/legislative affairs or acquired experience in formulating and advancing federal legislative and regulatory policy, preferably 3-5 years Hill experience working on health issues
- Excellent public speaking ability
- Strong professional writing skills
