Description: This course describes radiologic evaluation of the cervical spine, one of the most frequently evaluated areas of the body. Understanding the underlying degenerative changes of the cervical spine revealed on radiograph is important for patient groups with conditions resulting from acute trauma, degenerative disorders, and chronic postural strains that cause pain and debilitation. A busy emergency department frequently evaluates the cervical spine for direct and indirect trauma. This area of the body is vulnerable to injury and any trauma should never be underestimated, even if the trauma is at a distant site. Clinicians should review the radiologist's report prior to initiating the evaluation of a patient who has sustained a cervical spine injury. This course also discusses the components of physical evaluations – including ligamentous stability tests, the history, clinical evaluation, and laboratory tests – that should be used as well as radiologic findings to determine treatment for patients who have sustained cervical spine trauma.
