Description: This lesson will focus on the role of physical therapy in treating moderate to severe brain injury in the acute and rehabilitation settings. It will provide information about the examination of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and review information useful for predicting functional outcomes in this population. The lesson begins with an overview of the mechanisms of injury and pathophysiology, followed by acute management issues. Rehabilitation issues are the focus of the remainder of the lesson, with discussion of strategies for managing high tone, heterotopic ossification, and behavior and cognitive deficits during physical therapy.
