Description: On October 20, 2011, the Department of Health Human Services (HHS) released the highly anticipated Medicare Shared Savings Program final rule on Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). The cornerstone of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), ACOs are networks of physicians, hospitals and other providers that will be incentivized to work together to achieve the three part aim of better care for individuals; better health for populations; and lower growth in Medicare expenditures. As these organizations form, the physical therapy profession will be faced with significant opportunities and challenges. Therefore, it is of vital importance that physical therapists and physical therapist assistants understand how ACOs will operate and what tools they can use to show the expertise and value that physical therapy will add to these formations.
