Residency and fellowship curriculum are based on the Description of Specialty Practice (DSP) for each of the seven ABPTS approved specialty areas. Orthopaedic Manual Therapy fellowship must have a curriculum that reflects the practice dimensions described in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Therapists' Orthopaedic Manual Therapy Description of Advanced Specialty Practice (DASP). Residencies that do not fall within the seven specialties must utilize a valid practice analysis for curriculum development and credentialing.
Programs completing a practice analysis should follow the "Guidelines for Conducting a Practice Analysis." Fellowship programs in subspecialty areas other than Orthopaedic Manual Therapy must possess a curriculum based on a detailed description of the knowledge, competency expectations, and patient population of a component of a DSP.
Resources are available through the American Board of Physical Therapy Resideny and Fellowship Education to assist programs in the development of a residency or fellowship curriculum and in the completion of the credentialing process.
