"The American Physical Therapy Association supports a health care system that provides all individuals within the United States access to and provision of high-quality health care that meets the needs of individuals, patient populations, and communities. APTA urges the US Department of Justice to defend insurance protections for people with preexisting conditions, consistent with current federal law.
"Prior to 2013, many insurers would not sell coverage to people with preexisting conditions such as diabetes, cancer, or depression. Other insurers would not cover services to address the preexisting conditions, or they would charge premiums that made insurance unaffordable. Parents of children with disabilities could not change jobs for fear that their child would lose coverage that could not be reinstated, or that would require the family to impoverish themselves so their child could be eligible for Medicaid.
"The Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that 27% of people under age 65 have preexisting conditions. Should the Department of Justice’s position prevail in federal court, the health and wellbeing of millions of Americans will be threatened.”
