President Ward Responds to Shooting at NIU

February 15, 2008

After yesterday's tragic events at Northern Illinois University it is difficult to express the sadness in our hearts. I wish to extend on behalf of the American Physical Therapy Association our sympathies to those who were personally affected.

While images and stories continue to unfold surrounding this horrific event, we may find comfort in the fact that as a nation we possess the unbroken American spirit — one of compassion, sympathy, and unselfishness. As we come together to mourn and to heal, we must allow this American spirit to resonate during this troubling time.

Our country is faced with the struggle of trying to understand why. As Virginia Tech University Distinguished Professor, poet and activist, Nikki Giovanni, so eloquently wrote "We will continue to invent the future through our blood and tears and through all our sadness...We will prevail..."

We will prevail.
