Statement by APTA President in Memory of Eunice Kennedy Shriver

August 11, 2009

On behalf of the American Physical Therapy Association, I wish to express deep sadness for the loss of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, a woman who brought so much to the lives of those who are intellectually challenged.

APTA has been working with Special Olympics for a number of years on its Healthy Athlete Program. Our members have been moved by not only the joy and sense of real achievement her vision brought to the athletes, but also the inspiration the Olympians themselves provide to so many, including their friends and families, those who help them train or compete, and the millions who are touched by the joy and triumph we see on their faces as they cross a finish line.

We know her legacy will go on. APTA is proud to be a partner of the Special Olympics and will continue to assist in the quest to reach the lofty, yet achievable goals Eunice Kennedy Shriver set forth.
