Prior to the House of Delegates, APTA's Board of Directors (Board) approved the association's updated strategic plan, which was revised during its March meeting. The updated plan reflects prioritized strategic outcomes (major initiatives) and strategies based on current environmental conditions and progress made over the past year. The plan will be available for members in July at www.apta.org/StrategicPlan.
The Board also appointed members to Board-appointed committees and task forces and accepted the 2010 audit statements. Additionally, the Treasurer and CFO provided the Board with a report from the Finance and Audit Committee and staff provided an update on the conceptual model for a reformed payment system.
A highlight of the meeting was the presentation of APTA's Public Service Award to Dorothy Shannon, PhD, by APTA President Scott Ward, PT, PhD. Shannon, who has extensive clinical background as an audiologist/speech language pathologist, retired in December 2010 after working for many years as a health insurance specialist in the Division of Practitioner Services, Hospital and Ambulatory Policy Group at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Shannon was the lead staff person responsible for developing and interpreting policy payment issues relating to outpatient rehabilitation. As she developed these policies, she recognized the importance of receiving input from stakeholders and was always very open to information and feedback provided by APTA and other organizations. In her acceptance remarks, Shannon noted that the feedback often resulted in significant improvements to policies.
