In the second installment of APTA's podcast series on Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), Roshunda Drummond-Dye, JD, regulatory and payment counsel in APTA's Government and Payment Advocacy unit, highlights 10 essential revisions outlined in the association's comments on the proposed rule and summarizes the next steps in the rulemaking process. She also discusses 2 projects under way in the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation related to ACOs. The first project, the Pioneer ACO Model, is designed for health care organizations and providers that are already experienced in coordinating care for patients across care settings. This model will allow these provider groups to move more rapidly from a shared savings payment model to a population-based payment model on a track consistent with, but separate from, the Medicare Shared Savings Program. The second project is the Advanced Payment Initiative, which seeks to provide organizations with funds to alleviate significant organizational start-up costs to form an ACO.
