APTA Urges BCBSNC to Cover EMG by PTs
In a recent letter to Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC), APTA urged the insurer to reconsider revising its medical policy on electrodiagnostic studies. Citing the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine's position that states that needle electromyography (EMG) must be performed by a physician with special training in electrodiagnostic medicine, BCBSNC will not cover electrodiagnostic studies when performed by non-physicians. APTA recommended that the insurer to adopt policies reflecting the ability of PTs certified in electrodiagnostic testing to perform the testing.
