On Friday, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released a final rule on Medicaid Recovery Audit Contractors (RACs) that provides states guidance related to federal/state funding of state start-up, operation, and maintenance costs of Medicaid RACs. The final rule also includes payment methodology regarding state payments to the RACs. States are directed to ensure that adequate appeal processes are in place for providers to dispute adverse determinations that are issued by the RACs. States also must coordinate with other contractors that are auditing Medicaid providers. The regulations take effect January 1, 2012. Watch APTA's Web site for a full summary of this final rule.
