  • Bill Would Allow Dentists, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons to Refer to PTs

APTA has voiced its support for the Medicare Oral Health Rehabilitative Enhancement Act of 2011 (HR 2863), legislation that would add dentists and oral and maxillofacial surgeons to the list of physicians who can certify the plan of care needed for Medicare beneficiaries to access physical therapists. "Currently, Medicare restricts dentists and oral and maxillofacial surgeons from referring to physical therapists even though 25 states explicitly authorize dentists to make these referrals," said APTA in a September 12 letter to Reps Dave Reichert (R-WA) and Bill Pascrell (D-NJ). "In fact, no state physical therapy practice act prohibits dentists from referring patients to physical therapists for treatment."

Reichert and Pascrell introduced HR 2863 on September 7 with support from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

    • Physical therapy has much to offer dental patients who experience TMJ pain.

    • It is ridiculous that PT's continue to need their plans certfied by a physician for medicare to pay for these services. I don't think medicare is saving any money by having this in place.

    • I so appreciate your work on this matter. This has been so difficult for practioners. We must scramble to contact busy physicians for PT referrals that are requested by dentists and oral surgeons. It is awkward at best for the PT, the patient, the physician and the dentist. Thank you. Thank you.

    • Why physical therapy plan of cars need to be certified by other healthcare professionals? This extra step can not save any money and/or time to any one as Ethan mentioned above. Physical therapists have adequate knowledge and skills to assess and treat this patient population without getting their plans of care certified. Ateeq Rahman, DPT, MS

    • Isn't this the whole point of Direct Access? Let's keep working on that too. With the education and experience of physical therapists, it is astounding that we still need our medicare plans of care certified. Having Dentists and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons authorized to sign plans of care is a good step in the mean time.
