  • APTA Seeks Unique Ideas and Tips for NPTM Campaign

    This October during National Physical Therapy Month (NPTM), APTA will be launching "Fit After 50," a multi-faceted public relations campaign aimed at helping people keep mobile as they age. In the coming weeks and months APTA members will hear much more about this campaign. In the meantime, APTA needs members' help in identifying tips to help Baby Boomers remain mobile and prevent injury after age 50. What advice do you give your patients? APTA is looking for unique ideas and tips, which could possibly be featured during the campaign in its social and traditional media relations efforts. E-mail public-relations@apta.org with your tips as soon as possible.


    • It is never too late to start exercising, no what your age. My father had never done much of anything in regard to a regular exercise program. At age 74, he started on a regular fitness routine and joined a gym. Now at 83, he is still going strong and feels better than he did at 73! Any age is a good age to start moving more!

    • after 45 years in my PT career I recorded video segments of an ongoing "Senior Fitness" program to assist retention of functional mobility. However, it is stalled,due to lack of venture capital. It could be utilized by all PTs, care givers and grandparents, ages 50-95 as a fun/routine 3X/wk. Is there any venture capital resources available that APTA can share?

    • Getting a proper evaluation and screening and finding a caring physical therapist is very appropriate for individuals transitioning into a new stage of life maturation. To be able to provide resources and education to patients that need assistance with their mobility needs and return them to activity they enjoy doing is what physical therapy is all about. Moving forward and improving your health by staying active, that is what we do. Gardening for 20-30 minutes, inviting your neighbor for a short walk in the fresh fall air, taking your elder neighbor to the grocery store once a month and plan a healthy meal together. Playing a round or two of golf with your children or chasing after some grandchildren. Locating a nearby aquatic facility. Renting a bicycle or finding a new ergonomic telephone that is easy to read with trifocals. These are just a few ideas for mobility and transition for National Physical Therapy Month.
