  • APTA Member James Buskirk Examines Today Show Host for Balance Issues

This morning’s airing of the Today show featured a segment with APTA member James Buskirk, PT, SCS. Show host Savannah Guthrie, who notes at times that she tends to be accident prone, traveled to Illinois to be evaluated by Buskirk. He performed a series of tests to track her vision, equilibrium, and spatial location, and he explained how he can design a rehabilitative program to help her with deficits in these areas.

    • Great job, Jim. I would like to have seen Savanah take more of a positive approach to therapy, she was dismissive of treatment options in the TV segment. maybe more that went on behind the scenes.

    • great segment right to the end except when Savannah 'pooh poohed' PT and said she would just deal with the bruises, maybe when your young but not later...anything more from APTA?

    • I agree that the anchorwoman could have had a more positive approach on air. Regardless, this is still great exposure for our profession. Thanks to Jim for his knowledge and representing our profession to the highest level of professionalism and expertise!

    • It's not a good idea to try to score some PR on the daily show. The public's impression of PT could go either way no matter how competent you are. It's like playing roulette with the honor of our profession.

    • It was very interesting and really showed the degree of knowledge and professionalizm that the PT's possess. But I can't convince my own husband to do exercise for his back pain, so unless the impairment is stopping the patient from doing something they love or is important to them, they will not invest the time or effort.
