Safe Patient Handling

Safe patient handling and movement (SPHM) refers to policies and programs that enable health care workers to move patients and clients in a way that does not cause strain or injury. The intent of the following information is raise awareness of safety concerns during patient handling in addition to recognizing that physical therapists and physical therapist assistants have a high rate of injury when doing manual lifts. Provided are materials on how to can avoid the risk factors associated with patient handling and movement especially in relation to rehabilitation and empower PTs and PTAs to be involved in implementation strategies to improve the safety within their environments for themselves and their patients.
