APTA Exhibits at 2013 NCSL Legislative Summit

APTA was again a leading exhibitor at the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) annual Legislative Summit, held August 13-15, 2013, at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. APTA's sponsorship and participation in the eighth annual NCSL "Walk for Wellness" and the APTA physical therapy information booth were prominent features at this year's event.

State lawmakers and legislative staff participated in warm-up exercises, led by Kate Hamilton, PT, DPT, OCS, and Steve Fridenmaker, PT, DPT, at the "Walk for Wellness," a 5K run/walk to raise awareness of conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, while drawing attention to health disparities that exist in underserved communities.

In addition, conference attendees took the "PT Challenge" at the APTA exhibit booth in which participants answered quiz questions on direct access, protection for the term "physical therapy," and the detrimental effect of high patient copays for PT services, to be eligible for a drawing for a Kindle Fire. This and other activities drew numerous state lawmakers from across the country to the APTA booth, where APTA State Government Affairs staff and Physical Therapy Association of Georgia (PTAG) volunteers educated them about direct access to physical therapist services, referral for profit (POPTS), infringement concerns, reimbursement challenges, and other issues important to the physical therapy profession at the state level.

The National Conference of State Legislatures is a bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staff of the nation's 50 states, and its commonwealths and territories. This year's Legislative Summit attracted more than 5,000 state legislators, regulators, association representatives, corporations, and public policy experts from around the country. Highlights from this year's event are posted below. Special thanks to the PTAG and the following chapter members for volunteering with APTA at this year's event: Ellen Hillegass, PT, PhD, FAPTA, CCS, Kate Hamilton, PT, DPT, OCS, Steve Fridenmaker, PT, DPT, and PTAG lobbyist Jason Skipper.
