Candidate Statement: Brandon Wielert, SPT

Brandon Wielert is a candidate for President on the Student Assembly Board of Directors.

My passion is to provide others the opportunity to challenge themselves and bring their life to a new level. My intentions to run for office are to inspire and challenge students to reach new grounds, all the while providing them opportunities to excel. From my experiences of going to conferences and symposiums, I have found one factor that inspires students: exposure. Students must be exposed to opportunities and individuals if they are to bring themselves to the next level in their educational, professional, and personal life. To be on the Board means to have the opportunity to inspire students, and I feel that this is something that I have been a part of for many years.

Through all educational levels, I have made it a goal to be involved as a leader. These experiences have fostered my growth and development into an effective leader today. As a leader, motivating others is one of my greatest strengths. Whether it has been as a president or on the Alumni Board at my undergraduate university, I have used motivation to bring about positive change. These leadership experiences have shown me that to be an effective leader; one must also have the ability to follow.

My enthusiasm has served as a driving force in all that I do. Family and mentors have always told me, "Life is 10% of what happens to you, and 90% of your attitude toward it." We are all in control of our destinies and have the ability to take a seemingly bad situation and flip it into an invaluable learning experience. An important strength that keeps me moving forward is vision. I see myself as a futuristic thinker and a "bird’s eye view" type of leader who looks forward to organizational development. Bringing together my communication, motivation, and vision, I will be an effective leader if chosen for office and will bring the Student Assembly forward to new grounds.

My vision for this office is to increase student involvement within APTA, promote student leadership, and provide students outlets for mentorship and interprofessional collaboration. The leaders of the Student Assembly must possess the attributes to inspire students to take an active role in their future profession. This involvement also can be facilitated by a mentorship program that will allow professionals the ability to contact students to aid in their journey. I will provide an opportunity for students to get in touch with other health care professions’ students as a means to come together to learn how to best serve our patients.

Being a student physical therapist has provided a wonderful outlet to utilize my skills to best serve humanity. Recent opportunities in student leadership have opened my eyes to how I can best serve not only my patients but my profession. The skills and attributes I possess are a reflection of my past experiences, and I intend to keep moving forward to make the greatest contribution to the greatest number of people!
