Candidate Statement: Carmen Walker, SPT

Carmen Walker is a candidate for Secretary on the Student Assembly Board of Directors.

Through my professional growth, I have wanted to become more involved with the business aspect of the physical therapy profession. Therefore, it is my intention to run for the secretary position of the Student Assembly to help ascertain my interest in the Student Assembly, my growth as a professional, and my future as a physical therapist.

I am the secretary of my class in the physical therapy program at Alabama State University, where I effectively fulfill my obligations. I successfully correspond with the class or faculty, as needed, by sending out e-mails and messages as requested by the class president and take minutes during class meetings. Multitasking and communicating effectively as well as being a compassionate and outgoing person are some of my key strengths. Not only do I possess the leadership skills necessary to fulfill this position, I also know how to step back and take instructions as needed.

Being an active member of several community-service–based organizations (Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity for Women, and Order of the Eastern Star, etc), I have obtained qualities that have allowed me to grow as a professional by becoming more reliable, dependable, trustworthy, and patient. My interpersonal and organizational skills have significantly heightened through membership in these organizations. I feel that my strengths are some of my best attributes and can be beneficial to the secretary position of the Student Assembly. These qualities allow me to take on any challenge that I may encounter; not only if elected for this position, but in every aspect of life.

If slated for the secretary position, I hope to achieve a greater understanding of APTA, how APTA and Student Assembly operate, create professional relationships with my fellow members of APTA, and connect with physical therapists and physical therapist assistants to learn and explore new ideas I may not have thought of. I plan to utilize and enhance my skills by being involved in this professional association.

As a result of being elected secretary, I would like to contribute as much value as possible by promoting awareness of the various activities APTA offers, not only to Alabama State University students but also to the students on a national level. In conclusion, I am more than willing to take this position and would love to continue my contribution to APTA and the community. I greatly appreciate the opportunity to write this statement, and thank you in advance for your consideration.
