Current Controversies in Physical Therapy- The 2008 Rothstein Debate: "Does the Current Model of Clinical Education Really Prepare Students for Practice?"
Thursday, June 12
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
(Course Level - Multiple Level) - 0.20 CEUs
According to some in the practice community, new physical therapist graduates do not have the skills to assume a full caseload in the clinic environment. Others say that the new graduate’s knowledge of clinical decision making is impressive, but is not manifested in actual clinical performance. Is the current model of clinical education preparing students to practice for Vision 2020? The annual Rothstein Debate was established in memory of Jules Rothstein, PT, PhD, FAPTA, Editor in Chief Emeritus of Physical Therapy (PTJ), and a life-long advocate of spirited and scholarly dialogue.
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to: 1) Discuss Vision 2020 and its implications for practice and education. 2) List the major challenges that are presented by the current practice environment, and explain how they interact with Vision 2020. 3) Describe the current clinical education model that is used by most physical therapy education programs today. 4) Describe alternative models of clinical education and compare/contrast the newer models with the traditional model.
Speakers:
Larry N Benz, PT, DPT, MBA, ECS, OCS - Louisville, KY;
Michael J Emery, PT, EdD, FAPTA - Fairfield, CT
