A Comprehensive Course on Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Practice in the Management of Patients in the Acute Care Setting: A Case-Based Approach using Human Simulation (Sponsored by the MA Chapter)
Wednesday, June 16
7:30 AM - 5:00 PM
(Course Level - Multiple Level) - 0.750 CEUs
- 2 Pages (20364_1_DirectionsToFacility.pdf)
*This course will be held at an off site simulation lab. Free transportation will be provided. Participants should plan to depart the Convention Center at 7:30 am.
*Onsite registration will not be allowed for this course.
Acute care settings are complex, busy environments in which physical therapists need to engage in multiple interactive roles with patients and members of the health care team, while focusing on providing the most efficacious care and achieving outcomes. This course will bring the science of cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy examination and evaluation to the forefront of patient management in the acute care setting and define the context in which patient care is delivered. Through lectures and use of a human simulation lab, participants will learn how best to utilize cardiovascular and pulmonary tests and measures to establish a physical therapy diagnosis and plan of care for patients with cardiovascular and pulmonary health conditions. With the didactic component, theory is brought to bear on current practice. By immersing the participants in real patient situations in a human simulation lab, a framework will be established for physical therapists to critically evaluate their clinical decision making. For more information on the lab space visit www.brighamandwomens.org/stratus.
Upon completion of this course, you’ll be able to: 1) Define the practice of cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy in the acute care setting. 2) Apply the skills of cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy to all aspects of patient/client management as part of an interdisciplinary team. 3) Analyze critical information necessary to properly assess a patient with a cardiovascular or pulmonary diagnosis. 4) Integrate critical information on body structure to identify functional changes that are either modifiable or non-modifiable. 5) Describe meaningful outcomes measures used in the description of patients in the process of evaluation. 6) Formulate a plan of care using critical objective results from examination outcome tests and measures. 7) Demonstrate advanced clinical examination and interpretation skills through group discussions of case studies in a simulation lab.
