National Provider Identifier (NPI)

Time is running out on physical therapists and other health care providers who are not using their National Provider Identifier (NPI) as the only provider number on their Medicare claims. The NPI will replace all previous billing numbers for all health plans – and starting May 23, 2008, Medicare will reject claims that include provider numbers other than the NPI. Physical therapists should be submitting batches of claims now to make sure that their NPIs are being recognized and avoid denied claims and payment problems on May 23.

The NPI is a 10-digit numeric identifier that will be a requirement for all individual health care providers who meet the definition of a "covered entity" under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Please see the resources below to gain a better understanding of the NPI.
