PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The goal of the physical therapy program is to graduate entry-level physical therapists that are able to meet the needs of an ever-changing healthcare environment and provide Physical Therapy services which address the needs of the “whole” client. The program provides a learning environment that addresses the theoretical framework integrated with the clinical decision-making processes and critical inquiry skills. In such an environment, the motivated, self-directed student will develop the discipline and skills essential for success in the field.
The Physical Therapy Program of Dominican College is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).
Dominican College offers two programs of study:
- The BA/DPT dual degree
- The DPT degree
The BA/DPT dual degree: This program allows students to earn two degrees; a B.A in Biology and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. The BA/DPT dual degree is for the student who desires to obtain an undergraduate degree in Biology. Following completion of three years as a Biology Major, candidates then apply to the DPT program.
The DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy) degree: This program is for students who already possess a baccalaureate degree and desire to enter the field of physical therapy.
The professional courses meet on eight alternate weekends per trimester with each instructional weekend including a Friday evening, and full days on Saturday and Sunday. The four full-time clinical affiliations, totaling 36 weeks, are scheduled during the regular work week. The weekend format allows students to continue part-time employment, to maintain family responsibilities, and to pursue other interests. Students are cautioned, however, that long work hours are generally incompatible with success in the program, which does require extensive study time. The Entry Level DPT program consists of 99 credits.
