My Sparked Interest
Estimated Reading Time: 1 minute
My interest was sparked at the 2017 North Carolina Chapter fall conference.
My professor, Melissa Scales, PT, DPT, introduced me to a few other highly engaged students.
They were excited for the first North Carolina Student Conclave (NCSC), and on the spot, I was asked if I’d like to join the planning committee for our chapter’s first student meeting.
Right away in working with the NCSC planning committee, I was struck by the work being done and teamwork demonstrated by this group of students. Not only that, but their energy was contagious, it was impossible not to get excited about this inaugural event.
When the NCSC finally arrived, our excitement was palpable. The event was great, and I was left hungry to experience more, to get more involved.
Months later my fellow classmate encouraged me to attend APTA’s NEXT 2018 conference. It didn’t take long to realize that I’d discovered something special, I’d found my people, I was in love.
The students and other attendees made this introvert feel included in the #PTfam and the profession!
I left NEXT 2018 feeling my passion fueled and with the desire to make all PT and PTA students feel included in the profession, show them benefits of being involved at all levels, and connecting individuals of like interests.
The feeling of inclusion has allowed me to professionally grow out of my comfort zone and interact with many individuals all over the country, even Puerto Rico on social media and at the recent Combined Sections Meeting.
After a years’ worth of experiences I can confidently say the physical therapy community is unique with everyone being so welcoming, genuine, and always willing to pull interested students into the fold.
My love story with our profession continues as my love for our association has been sparked.
I will be forever thankful to those initial introductions for igniting my passion and helping me find my APTA value early in my professional career.
