As a Southern California native, I grew up in Compton, California, in a biracial family during a time when gangs and drugs ran rampant throughout the city. My blue-collar parents were determined to have their children be successful and make it out of the inner city. My parents sent both me and my older brother to private schools, where we had to commute more than 30 minutes each way.
