The Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program is a voluntary program designed primarily for people interested in or involved with clinical education, such as clinical instructors, site coordinators of clinical education, and directors of clinical education. It is recognized by APTA as a clinical instructor education and credentialing program.

Other health care providers who offer clinical education in a supervisory role to students, including physical therapists and physical therapist assistants, and health care providers from other professions can use this program to enhance their clinical instruction education.

The Level 1 course is offered in a synchronous virtual and in-person format.

E-manual for Level 1 Course

As the CCIP continues to move forward with the APTA Go Green Initiative, we have transitioned over to an e-manual for the Level 1 course. Trainers no longer need to order manuals or be responsible for handing them out to participants, and courses can accept registrations later.

The e-manuals are in a writeable .PDF format, with plenty of spaces added where participants can add notes in each section. Hard copy manuals will still be made available, for an additional $50 fee above the current course cost.

CCIP Level 1 Course Pre-Course Assignment
This pre-course work is to be completed before attending the CCIP Level 1 course. The assignment prepares participants for the discussion and cases addressed during Section I of the course.

  • Approval of registration, after review, by the course trainer.
  • APTA course registration fee ($100/member, $200/nonmember).*

* Included as part of APTAs course registration fee are the Level 1 manual, Assessment Center, CI credential  (PTs and PTAs only) and continuing education unit certificate(s), CI credential pin, and registry in an APTA database. For more information, contact ccip@apta.org.

Taking the Assessment (for PTs and PTAs)

The Assessment Center provides an opportunity to apply information from the program in various simulated situations and stations. Successful completion of all stations in the Assessment Center results in the awarding of APTA CI credentialing. Each participant must attend all sessions of the course and Assessment Center in its entirety to be eligible for credentialing.

PT and PTA participants have the ability to earn 1.6 CEUs and the APTA CCIP Level 1 credential. Clinicians from other health care professions who complete the CCIP Level 1 course are eligible to receive 1.2 CEUs, but are not awarded the Level 1 CI credential.

Note: Licensees should verify acceptance of CEUs with their state licensing board by reviewing the relevant state practice act and administrative code.

Earn CEUs While Updating Your Clinical Expertise

The CCIP offers a series of online booster modules intended for CIs who have already completed the Level 1 course. The modules do not replace Level 1 training, but rather address many areas in the Level 1 course and help boost an individual's knowledge and skills.
