What is the Career Starter Dues Program?
Career Starter Dues is the way for you to save 50% (up to $270) off your national and chapter dues in your first year postgraduation, plus receive a free registration to APTA's NEXT Conference & Exposition.
Additionally, APTA currently is offering a limited-time pilot opportunity for eligible members 2-4 years postgraduation to save on membership renewal. (The pilot has been approved through 2018 and is subject to change by the APTA Board of Directors.)
The discounts for the pilot are as follows:
- 40% off national, participating chapter & participating section dues - second year postgraduation
- 30% off national, participating chapter & participating section dues - third year postgraduation
- 20% off national, participating chapter & participating section dues - fourth year postgraduation
Is my chapter or section participating in the Career Starter Dues pilot?
APTA and all chapters participate in the current Career Starter Dues program and offer 50% off national and chapter dues for members in their first year postgraduation.
Each year during the pilot, sections are invited to enroll, re-enroll, or discontinue its participation in the Career Starter Dues program and pilot for members 1-4 years postgraduation. In 2018, eleven sections will participate in the program.

What do I need to do to receive Career Starter Dues savings at my next renewal?
Nothing! Your hard copy and online membership renewal form will automatically reflect the appropriate Career Starter Dues savings, if you're eligible. Refunds for prior renewals will not be provided.
How do I know if I'm eligible for Career Starter Dues savings?
- Make sure that your APTA student membership is active at graduation.
- Maintain continuous APTA membership postgraduation.
What's the cost to renew my APTA membership?
Use the APTA Dues Calculator to estimate your national, chapter, and optional section dues before Career Starter Dues savings are applied. Your renewal notice will indicate career starter dues savings, if you're eligible. Note: Career Starter Dues savings do not apply to section dues.
I graduated from PT/PTA school in 2015; will I qualify for Career Starter Dues savings at my next renewal in 2018?
Yes, as long as you've been an APTA member continuously since your last year as a student PT or PTA through now.
My chapter is not participating in the pilot; can I join a different chapter?
No, members are required to belong to the chapter of the state in which they live, work, or attend school (or an adjacent state if more active participation is possible).
What happens if I move and my new chapter isn't participating in the pilot? Am I still eligible for Career Starter Dues savings?
Eligible Career Starter Dues members will continue to save 50% off national and chapter dues first year postgraduation. If your new chapter doesn't participate in the limited-time pilot for members 2-4 years postgraduation, appropriate Career Starter Dues savings will still apply to your national dues; however, chapter dues would be full.
Note: When relocating to a new state, members can switch chapter affiliation at any point during their current membership term or at renewal.
I was a student member in the past; however, my membership expired before graduation. Am I still eligible for Career Starter Dues savings?
No, to qualify for Career Starter Dues savings, your APTA student membership must have been current at graduation.
If my membership expires, am I still eligible for Career Starter Dues savings?
No, continuous membership is required to qualify for subsequent phase(s) of Career Starter Dues savings.
Note: Student members at graduation have up to 6 months from their student expiration date to renew and still maintain eligibility for Career Starter Dues savings.
I graduated from my PT program in 2006 and earned a postprofessional MBA degree in 2015. Am I eligible for Career Starter Dues savings?
No, Career Starter Dues eligibility is based on the graduation date associated with your entry-level PT or PTA program graduation date, not your postprofessional degree.
Can I use my free registration for APTA's NEXT Conference & Exposition to attend Combined Sections Meeting (CSM)?
No, your free registration can be applied only toward the in-person NEXT Conference & Exposition that occurs during your first year postgraduation.
I'm completing a residency/fellowship and receive the PT Post-professional student dues rate. Am I eligible for Career Starter Dues savings on top of those savings?
No, you must choose either the PT Post-professional student dues rate or the Career Starter Dues program.
I've completed my residency/fellowship and am currently assigned to the PT Post-postprofessional student dues category. Am I eligible for Career Starter Dues savings at my next renewal?
If you've graduated or completed your APTA-credentialed residency or fellowship program, you may qualify for reduced dues under the Career Starter Dues pilot (continuous membership required).
