In this APTA Podcast episode, Vice President of Strategic Affairs Drew Contreras, PT, DPT, and Senior Director of Brand Strategy Alicia Hosmer discuss the partnership between APTA and the National Strength and Conditioning Association with NSCA Board members Jaynie Bjornaraa, PT, PhD, and Antonio Squillante, PhD. The partnership was announced at the APTA Combined Sections Meeting in Anaheim, California, in February.
Together, they discuss the associations' missions and the overlap between physical therapists and certified strength and conditioning specialists in promoting health and well-being through evidence-based practices for athletes and patients alike. The discussion also covers how collaboration between these two professions helps improve patient performance and outcomes.

Our Speakers

Jaynie Bjornaraa, PT, PhD, certified strength and conditioning specialist with distinction, certified special populations specialist with distinction, serves on the NSCA Board of Directors and has chaired various NSCA committees . A longtime APTA member, she is the senior vice president of clinical quality evaluation and digital self-care solutions at American Specialty Health, where she manages the medical necessity review team and oversees digital fitness and self-care programs for health plan members.

Antonio Squillante, PhD, certified strength and conditioning specialist with distinction, registered strength and conditioning coach with distinction, serves on the NSCA Board of Directors. He is an assistant professor of kinesiology at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego and heads Sport Performance and Training for the USA Cycling National Track Sprint Program. He is also a published author and an international speaker and lecturer.

Drew Contreras, PT, DPT, is a board-certified clinical specialist in sports physical therapy and APTA's vice president of strategic affairs. A decorated U.S. Army veteran with more than 25 years of experience, he has served on numerous professional boards.

Alicia Hosmer is senior director of brand strategy and communications at APTA and brings over 20 years of experience leading brand and growth initiatives for associations.
