In this review: Factors related to reversal of prediabetes in patients from a cardiovascular risk program during 2019- 2023 (BMC Research, open access).

The Message

In this study, patients with prediabetes — defined as elevated glycemia levels not meeting diagnostic criteria for diabetes — enrolled in a structured cardiovascular risk program with quarterly multidisciplinary check-ins and a physical therapy-led exercise prescription of greater than 150 minutes per week. With this regimen, patients achieved meaningful rates of reversion to normoglycemia, or a normal concentration of sugar in the blood. The results show that when exercise is integrated into a team-based program and monitored regularly, physical therapy can help shift the trajectory from prediabetes toward reversal. In short, the role of physical therapy is a key component of a multidisciplinary program that achieves good outcomes for those with prediabetes.
