The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is poised to expand Medicare coverage in a way that could be a real help to many individuals with severe disabilities, and APTA is calling on members and other supporters to help make that expansion a reality.

In a potential win for patients and the profession, CMS has proposed to extend Medicare coverage for power seat elevation equipment on Group 3 power wheelchairs designed for individuals with severe disabilities. Coverage of the devices, which help with transfers from the wheelchair to other surfaces, has been a longstanding target of advocacy for APTA and other organizations.

The proposal is now open for public comment until March 17. APTA is urging members and others to provide comments to CMS in support of the expansion. Visit the CMS coverage decision comment page to voice your support for the change.
